CE 2003 Madeira Island, Portugal 

The 10th ISPE Conference on Concurrent Engineering CE2003 - the vision for the future generation in research and applications - held at Madeira Island on 2000-07-25/30 , was organised by Uninova Lisboa and attended by over 350 participants, with a large portion coming from academia from the three major world industrial areas Europe, North America and the Far East. 

The CE2003 was held under two major themes: 

  • Advanced Design, Production and Management  Systems – with tracks addressing topics like Complex products development, emerging technologies in product life cycle, business and virtual project teams in dynamic collaborative networks, human is sues with concurrent engineering
  • Enhanced Interoperable Systems – with tracks addressing topics like agents and multi-agent systems, e-business standards, enterprise architectures and continuous business solutions, products and process models for enterprise integration. With four papers from COA members on Service-based Architectures, Enterprise Inter- and Intra-organisational Integration (EI3), User -oriented Enterprise Modelling and Standardisation in EI3 .
The conference was organised in keynote plenary sessions, track sessions and panel discussions. Within seven parallel sessions a total of 320 papers were presented structured in 12 tracks with 3 sessions per track. In the plenary sessions global issues which were addressed by keynote speakers from the European Commission, from NIST and from Far East agencies presenting their view and position on topics like the worldwide development of e-Business. Europe as a common knowledge based community at a turning point in research, administration and policies of the upcoming 6th Framework Programme. 

Business process modelling and enterprise integration have been addressed in 6 sessions including the two sessions organised by the CIMOSA Association. Knowledge management, Agent technologies and Standards for e-business have been other aspects of concurrent engineering relating to BPM and EI.

Standardisation itself was recognised as a valuable means for effective product development, production, communication, even research. One problem is that the required consensus building and implementation of standards is rather slow.
